John Daly is a big man, with a big personality and a bold wardrobe, but this Sunday it wasn't about his off the course antics, instead it was about a return to on the course glory. Daly walked off the 18th green in The Woodlands as a winner on The Champions Tour for the first time, and as a winner in a PGA Tournament for the first time in 13 years.
It was no pretty finish for Daly as he finished the day with 3-straight bogeys but it was an amazing celebration as friends soaked the red white and blue clad golfer with champagne after the big hitter finished his day. For those who know the antics of John Daly, from cigars on the golf course, to hitting tee shots off of beer cans, there seemed to be no better fitting way to celebrate his first win in the over 50 tour than this one.
What is so incredible about this story is here's a guy who continues to prove he can be successful in golf his own way. John Daly you may remember is the same golfer who sets up a tent in a lot at the local Hooter's in Augusta during The Master's, and he still has the big belly that he almost should have a copyright on.
Yet, a win means that the man who lives life his way is now $322,500 dollars richer than he was when this tournament began, and one can assume that the shower of champagne on the course was only just the beginning of the parties to come.
Daly has now played a full year on The Champions Tour, and to him the winning has come a little sooner than even he expected of himself.
“Now, I can say I’m a champion on the Champions Tour, which is really cool,” Daly said. “Hopefully, I can keep this confidence going.” Daly being Daly. Not much substance, not too much pride, and a lot of fun. From those of us here at A Seat at The Table, keep doing you John Daly, keep doing you.
